Have you ever wondered how 19th-century fashions were made, worn, worked in, washed and mended? Discover the stories behind wedding dresses, maternity wear, mourning garb and gowns for waltzing in, as we showcase clothes and accessories of ladies, maids and labourers via unique original garments from the History Wardrobe collection.

Take a glimpse inside the Victorian woman's wardrobe and discover the contrast between upstairs and downstairs through fashion.

Gawthorpe Hall has many windows, you can craft your own colourful window, just like the ones at the Hall. Bring the family along to find their creative side using paper and recycled materials. Drop-in, no booking needed.

Stained Glass Style Crafts

9am - Moth Morning in the Walled Garden (Meet outside Hall)
Check the moth traps to see what moth species fly around overnight. 

10am - Butterfly Transect through the grounds  (Meet in Walled Garden)
Carry out a 2km butterfly transect through the grounds, recording any butterfly species we see onsite.

11am - Woodland Walk with National Trust Ranger  (Meet outside Hall)
Come for a walk with Ranger through the grounds and learn about the biodiversity present on site. Learn about the different tree species and the highs and lows of woodland ecology.

12am - Walled Garden BioBlitz (Meet in Walled Garden)
The main sampling of the day, join us as we assess the biodiversity in the Walled Garden. Sweep netting, beat trays, botanical surveys, and grubbing about to identify the many plants and invertebrates that are present in the grounds.  Some ID sheets and sampling material is provided, but please feel free to bring your own. The main invertebrate groups will be spiders, molluscs, insects, woodlice, springtails and earthworms.

3pm - Woodland Ecology Walk and Talk (Meet in Walled Garden)
Come for a more in-depth walk with a National Trust Ranger through the wider estate and learn about the challenges of conservation and what work is being carried out to improve biodiversity. Discover the different types of woodland present onsite and learn about the different ancient woodland features found here.
